The Comic Value Of A Very Serious Man

Comedy has understood something for a very long time that keeps being rediscovered. The funniest possible character is not the clown.

It is the person who takes themselves entirely seriously while everything around them fails to cooperate.

Dignity Under Assault

Almost every enduring comic figure is built on this. Someone with an enormously high opinion of their own gravity, placed in circumstances that will not sustain it.

The comedy is not in the failure. It is in the continued insistence on dignity throughout the failure. A person who acknowledges the absurdity is not funny; a person maintaining full formality while it happens is very funny indeed.

Why The Clown Is Less Funny

Somebody trying to be amusing has already told you the frame. Nothing they do can be a surprise, because absurdity was the announced intention.

The self-serious figure has announced the opposite. Every collapse is therefore genuinely unexpected within the world they have constructed, and unexpectedness is most of comedy.

Trying to be funny lowers the ceiling. Refusing to be funny raises it considerably.

Which Is Why Public Life Is So Productive For The Genre

Political theatre is built almost entirely from performed gravity. The staging, the vocabulary, the flags, the standing at podiums, the specific voice adopted for saying ordinary things.

All of it is an attempt to appear more substantial than a person standing in a room, and any gap between that performance and reality is comic material that requires no invention at all.

Satirists do not add absurdity to politics. They stop assisting with the concealment of it.

The Craft Point

This is why the best political comedy is delivered flatly and why exaggeration usually weakens it.

If the subject is already performing seriousness at maximum, the funniest available response is to describe it plainly. Exaggerating competes with the subject. Plain description simply removes their cover.

The Test

You can spot it easily once you know. Watch for anybody insisting on their own significance while something visibly refuses to cooperate.

The insistence is the joke. It always was, and it has been the joke for about two and a half thousand years.
